ABOUT THE WALK

What is walktheirwalk?

walktheirwalk is a 12-mile walk-a-thon to raise money for children living in Zambia, Africa who are orphaned by the devastating effects of HIV and AIDS and extreme poverty. 100% of all funds raised are directed to World Vision where the money is used in existing Area Development Projects.  Money raised by the 2008 walk-a-thon will be implemented into a community in Zambia, Africa called Twachiyanda.

What if I want to participate and cannot walk 12 miles?
You are welcome to participate in any way possible.  Feel free to walk whatever portion of the route you desire (whether it is 1/2 mile or 12 miles).   If you would rather not walk at all, there are many volunteer opportunities available.  Email info@walktheirwalk.com for more information.

What exactly do I need to do?
Sign up to walk!  Invite your friends, family, co-workers, and classmates to join the cause by signing up to walk with you or by sponsoring you with donations.

How do I register to walk?
Participants are able to register online, click here to register.

Am I able to register on the day of the event?
Yes, walkers are able to register the morning of the event.  We encourage as many walkers as possible to register on-line to allow for a quicker check-in process. Also, pre-registering helps organizers plan accordingly for necessary supplies.

When is the event?
walktheirwalk will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2008 at 7:30am.  Check-in will begin at 7:00am.

What do I need to bring with me to the walk-a-thon?
WATER! There will be water stations at the mid-point and end of the walk; however, it is strongly recommended that you also bring your own supply of water. Be sure to bring sunscreen, hat and sunglasses. Dress appropriately for weather conditions.

Where is the event held?
The walktheirwalk 12-mile walk-a-thon will take place at Lake Murray Regional Park in La Mesa, California. Find out more information about the event here.  If there is not an organized event near you and you would like to walk we would love to hear from you.  We would love to help you map out a 12-mile course in your community. Additionally, if you feel led to do so we would love to help you organize a walktheirwalk walk-a-thon in your community.

Is this event open to people of all ages?
YES!

May I run instead of walk?
Sure!  In 2007 there were a few groups of runners that participated.

I am a parent. Can I bring my child with me?
YES! It is wonderful for entire families to participate. Strollers and children are always welcome.

I am under 18 years old, do I need a chaperone?
Yes.  Although the selected routes are in safe communities, young people under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. One adult is needed for every four participants under 18 years of age.

Where does all the money go?
100% of all money raised goes directly to World Vision's Hope Initiative to care for orphan children. In 2008 we are raising money to provide fresh water for people living in Zambia.
